Patient Advocacy Champion Award for Lobular Ireland

The Irish Cancer Society are delighted to announce that it has awarded Siobhán Freeney Round 1 of the Patient Advocate in Cancer Research Champion Awardees 2022.

Siobhán Freeney http://www.LobularIreland.com is a patient advocate for Lobular Breast Cancer Research. After her delayed, late stage Invasive lobular breast cancer diagnosis, Siobhán found it incredibly difficult to find relevant lobular, patient specific, information and was determined to become more involved in PPI activities around research into her disease, the second most common subtype of breast cancer.

Siobhán is Chair of ‘Lobular Ireland’ a network of patients and advocates, working closely alongside a scientific board of breast cancer researchers and clinicians. Siobhán is the Irish Patient Advocate with the European Lobular Breast Cancer Consortium www.elbcc.org.

Siobhán founded  www.beingdense.com, an educational website, increasing awareness of breast density, associated risk of developing Breast Cancer and importance of relevant breast cancer screening for women with Dense Breasts. She sits on several PPI steering group committees in Ireland and Europe, she’s also been co-author on several published studies and journal articles recently.

In June Siobhán was presented with ‘A Lifetime Achievement Award for Services to Cancer Prevention’ by The International Cancer Prevention Institute when she was invited to speak at their International Workshop for Cancer Prevention in Italy.

The Irish Cancer Society Patient Advocate in Cancer Research Champion Award helped Siobhán to travel to The European ILC Symposium and moderate the session led by patient advocates with researchers and other advocates from the European Lobular Breast Cancer Consortium. With the funding Siobhán will also host a dissemination event to share her experiences and learnings from the International ILC symposium and enhance our understanding of Invasive Lobular Breast Cancer.
